Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. August-Wilhelm Scheer has been president of the Federal Association for Information Management and New Media (BITKOM) since 2007. He was appointed vice president of the Federal Association of the German Industry (BDI) in the same year. From May 1975 to February 2005, he was the director of the Institute for Business Informatics in the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) at the Saarland University with a research focus on information and business process management for industrial, service and administrative applications. Since March 2005, he has been a professor with advisory capacity at the DFKI. In 1984, he founded the international software and consulting firm IDS Scheer AG, which now has subsidiaries in 27 countries. The book " ARIS Architektur integrierter Informationssysteme - Grundlagen der Unternehmensmodellierung (ARIS architecture of integrated information systems - principals of corporate modelling)" was published in 1991. It contains the basic concept of the ARIS tool sets developed by IDS. Today he is the chair of the supervisory board of both companies. Since November 1999, he has been the authorised representative for innovation, technology and research of the prime minister of Saarland.
From 2002 to 2008 and from 1988 to 1998, August-Wilhelm Scheer was a member of the supervisory board of SAP AG in Walldorf. From 2004 to 2005, he was a member of the board of trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIG) and since 2005, he has been a member of the senate of the Fraunhofer Association. From 2006 to 2008, he was a member of the Council for Innovation and Growth of the Federal Government.
August-Wilhelm Scheer has published several book series and magazines, is the author of more than 300 magazine articles and more than ten books, including the standard references „Wirtschaftsinformatik: Referenzmodelle für industrielle Geschäftsprozesse (Business informatics: reference models for industrial business processes)" and „ARIS: Vom Geschäftsprozeß zum Anwendungssystem (ARIS: from business process to user system)" as well as „ARIS: Modellierungsmethoden, Metamodelle, Anwendungen (ARIS: modelling methods, metamodels, applications)".
